Art therapy involves using arts and creative processes to help people identify, explore and express their feelings, communicate, make sense of difficult and complex events, connect with others, and learn new ways of coping. Like the adults in their lives, children have been impacted by the devastating recent fires in LA, whether they have had to flee, lost their homes, schools, and places of worship, been displaced, or simply felt the destabilizing effects of this catastrophic event on the city they call home. Art therapy is a particularly helpful tool to help kids cope in the aftermath of a disaster because art can be soothing and relaxing, and it can also give them a safe container to talk about and explore their feelings, hopes and fears.
