The Franklin Mural Project is a physical and digital mural project located on Franklin High School’s campus in Highland Park, aimed at cultivating critical perspectives of place in Northeast Los Angeles (NELA) by connecting students with the land and its history. In 2005, Franklin High School teachers Arturo Romo and Reies Flores began collaborating with students to create two large murals on campus depicting Tongva histories.
Since 2023, OXY ARTS has partnered with Franklin HS to complete the unfinished second floor mural, continuing the original model of student-led, critical placemaking. The second floor mural and subsequent murals continue to depict Tongva life in NELA. In addition to painting the mural, students also participate in field work and learn from Tongva Culture bearers visiting their campus to share their knowledge. This project is funded by the Reed Foundation.
